Live Like Luke Beach Cleanup Saturday, April 26th
Join us on Saturday, April 26th at Greenwich Point to celebrate Earth Day by cleaning up the winter’s trash. Stop by the Friends of Greenwich Point table to take home a free native plant. This event honors Luke Meyers, GHS environmental activist who lost his battle with cancer in 2019. His mother, Kerry Meyers, noted that Luke was an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be remembered for his immeasurable kindness, his remarkable creativity, his passion for learning and his determination to make positive changes in the world.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation has honored Luke by installing a climate change education exhibit at the Bruce Museum Seaside Center. He wanted the exhibit to focus on sea-level rise and its impact on Long Island Sound marine life and to increase awareness of the actions that can be taken to slow down global warming.
All non-biodegradable debris will be tallied and reported to Save the Sound for submission to the Ocean Conservancy, which coordinates results from organizations throughout the world to analyze types and levels of the pollution in the earth’s waters.
This year, local artists Michael Manning and Ben Quesnel will be on hand to use materials collected during this Cleanup for an installation art project—transforming debris into a powerful statement on sustainability and environmental awareness.
